Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry Department

Pharmacognosy is an important discipline in the Pharmacy curriculum which deals with the study of crude drugs that includes plants, animals and marine sources. It is one of the oldest branches of pharmacy profession concerned with the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of natural drugs, including the search for new drugs from natural sources.
India has rich heritage of large number of medicinal plants which have been used for various medicinal purposes from many centuries. Pharmacognosy today represents a highly interdisciplinary science which is one of the five major areas of pharmaceutical education. It includes aspects of cell and molecular biology in relation to natural products, ethnobotany and phytotherapy, in addition to the more traditional analytical method development and phytochemistry. Renewed interest in the area of natural products research is highly motivated by the health claims for nutraceuticals, the validation of traditional medicines and the widespread use of Phytotherapeutics. The subject plays a diverse role in the discovery, characterization, production, and standardization of crude drugs.
Pharmacognosy Laboratory is equipped with the instruments such as microscopes (Simple, Compound), Muffle Furnace, UV chamber, Autoclave, pH meter, centrifuge, various extraction assemblies such as Soxhlet apparatus, Clevenger apparatus, etc. Identification of crude drugs by microscopy, isolation of phytoconstituents, phytochemical screening, herbal drug standardization, qualitative and quantitative evaluation of crude drugs are some of the major experiments being carried out in the Pharmacognosy laboratory

Vision

Aims to offer a sound upbringing and to avant- garde mastery in education and research in natural products by exploring the locally available natural resources and make use of its potential as Pharmaceuticals, Nutraceuticals and Cosmeceuticals.

Mision

To provide high quality education
To make discovery & research in natural products by integrating the recent knowledge of medicinal plants, micro-organisms & marine sources
To find out the scope of herbal drug therapy through continuous & innovative research
To promote the use of natural products
To develop new and suitable extraction or isolation methods for natural products used in Pharmaceutical, dietary supplements & cosmetics
To develop a suitable standardization method for natural products

Objectives

To enlighten students by providing knowledge and insight into modern techniques used for the separation, isolation, screening, and utilization of natural constituents
To equip students with the skills necessary for identifying and characterizing natural compounds.
To encourage students to explore and discover novel active constituents from natural sources.
To highlight the importance of drugs of natural origin in the treatment of chronic diseases, focusing on their efficacy with minimal or no side effects.
To explore the available financial resources from management and funding agencies, so that to achieve the above goals.
To deliver lectures of updated topics to parent as well as other institutions.
To arrange syllabus and designed distributed lecture handouts to improve student understanding.
Graded assignments according to strict institutional policies and upheld guidelines for academic integrity.
As a mentor to the UG and graduated students in effective next steps in education and career preparedness.
To work with the struggling students one-on-one and improve the ability.
